After W.W. II my parents died from typhus. With two sisters I left Rumania in 1947, was in Cyprus in an English (captive) camp, then came to Palestine in 1948. In 1949, as a boy of 14, I began to learn in an agricultural school, Shfeya. Shfeya was a mandolin fortress-about 100 mandolin students, and a mandolin orchestra, directed and taught by Moshe Jacobson, a very good teacher and musician. In 1950 I began to play. Moshe taught us musical theory; we had tests each year, both for theory and playing. The level was high. After a few years I joined the orchestra of Shfeya graduates and stayed with it until 1975.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ich begann meine musikalische Ausbildung mit der Mandoline. Shfeya war eine Mandolinenfestung &#8211; etwa 100 Mandolinensch\u00fcler und ein Mandolinenorchester, geleitet und unterrichtet von Moshe Jacobson, einem sehr guten Lehrer und Musiker. Im Jahr 1950 begann ich zu spielen. Moshe unterrichtete uns in Musiktheorie; wir hatten jedes Jahr Pr\u00fcfungen, sowohl f\u00fcr die Theorie als auch f\u00fcr das Spiel. Das Niveau war hoch. I had never played an unaccompanied solo before. I learned that the mandolin was capable of more, much more than what I knew before. About the same year I began a fruitful duet playing with Ofra Alboher, a very good mandolin player. I liked duet playing from childhood, its intimacy, the give and take of changing roles of melody and accompaniment, the mutual listening involved, the importance of every tone, shades of dynamics. I was more of a listener, and adapted myself to playing the second part in most of the pieces. I like the thrill of playing, but at the same time like listening to what my partner plays, and the intercourse and feedback it brings about.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>So Ofra and I devoted regular sessions to duet playing, and after an audition for the official radio, we did two recitals in 1974 and 1975, rebroadcast several times since. We also played J.S. Bach&#8217;s D minor Double Concerto. I felt it made fine music, and decided to record it. Ich war eher ein Zuh\u00f6rer und habe mich daran gew\u00f6hnt, bei den meisten St\u00fccken den zweiten Part zu spielen. Ich mag den Nervenkitzel des Spielens, aber gleichzeitig h\u00f6re ich auch gerne zu, was mein Partner spielt, und mag den Austausch und das Feedback, das dadurch entsteht.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also widmeten Ofra und ich uns regelm\u00e4\u00dfig dem Duospiel, und nach einem Vorspiel f\u00fcr den offiziellen Rundfunk gaben wir 1974 und 1975 zwei Konzerte, die seitdem mehrmals ausgestrahlt wurden. Wir spielten auch das d-Moll-Doppelkonzert von J.S. Bach. Ich war der Meinung, dass es eine sch\u00f6ne Musik ist, und beschloss, es aufzunehmen. What do you stress? What materials do you use?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I tell a student the truth: the mandolin, like any other instrument, is a fine one but difficult to play. I stress daily practice; correct counting; accurate pickdirections; a full tone; early duet playing; early ensemble playing; early performing for th~~ public; early self-tuning of the mandolin by the student; teach known and beloved folksongs, some by heart; dynamics; much sight reading.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MWN: Was ist Ihre Philosophie f\u00fcr den Unterricht? I stress a dynamic approach, a mastering of tone by the leading&nbsp;(pick-holding) hand, right or left. There the veterans taught the youngsters. But it really began in 1977. I decided to devote myself entirely to the mandolin, performing and teaching. I handed over my carpentry workshop to a relative. I began to teach about 30 children near Tel-Aviv. In 1976 I wrote a curriculum for a mandolin school. Teaching always interested me and I liked it. When I began to teach large numbers of children, I had to develop a systematic method and a reliable approach. I was soon teaching 100 children per week.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In the curriculum I followed the traditional way of beginning with tremolo. I dropped it as I realized empirically that with today&#8217;s youngsters a quicker method is a must. I evolved the simple system of teaching the alternate stroke, then accelerate it to tremolo. It worked well. Of course I have learned a lot of teaching tricks, adaptable in every country. (See beginning of Book I.) I&#8217;ve also used holding the mandolin with a strap, with very good results both for myself (since 1973) and the students.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MWN: Wann haben Sie mit dem Unterrichten begonnen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AL: Ich begann als Teenager in Shfeya zu unterrichten. Dort unterrichteten die Veteranen die jungen Leute. Aber so richtig begann es 1977. Ich beschloss, mich ganz der Mandoline zu widmen, zu spielen und zu unterrichten. Ich \u00fcbergab meine Schreinerei an einen Verwandten. Ich begann, etwa 30 Kinder in der N\u00e4he von Tel-Aviv zu unterrichten. Im Jahr 1976 schrieb ich einen Lehrplan f\u00fcr eine Mandolinenschule. Das Unterrichten hat mich schon immer interessiert, und es hat mir gefallen. Als ich begann, eine gro\u00dfe Anzahl von Kindern zu unterrichten, musste ich eine systematische Methode und einen zuverl\u00e4ssigen Ansatz entwickeln. Ich lie\u00df sie fallen, als ich empirisch feststellte, dass bei den heutigen Jugendlichen eine schnellere Methode ein Muss ist. Wasserman (who died in 1978) how to set a mandolin&#8217;s playability. My carpentry helped me there. For every student I file the fretboard straight, and adjust the nut and bridge. I set the nut and bridge as low as possible, 1,5 mm at the 12th fret. I am a maximalist at minimizing nut and bridge height. I like it myself as it allows me easier playing. For children, especially at 7-9 years, it is a must. So I use low action.
